One of the most iconic southern foods we enjoy here in the Lowcountry, shrimp & grits, is being combined with one of our favorite pastimes, partying at community festivals, in the Seventh Annual Bridges Prep Block Party Shrimp and Grits Cook-Off coming to Paris Avenue in Port Royal on Saturday, March 28th, 2020!
The popular street festival is scheduled from 11 am until 4 pm featuring local chefs competing for top honors with their own personal versions of shrimp and grits. The winning recipe will receive the People’s Choice Award for the BEST Shrimp and Grits in the Lowcountry.
The day will be filled with fabulous food and topped with adventure for all ages. We will have live music by Steel Rail Express, unique artisans, a variety of food trucks, a beer garden, a kids zone and more! Be sure to grab your dancing shoes, bring your appetite and join us on Paris Avenue.
Shrimp & grits is a combination of two of the simplest and most abundant local foods in the Lowcountry. Shrimp, and stone-ground corn..aka grits. It’s historically a traditional breakfast dish, though many consider it more of a lunch or supper dish. Starting out as a seasonal fisherman’s dish of shrimp cooked in bacon grease served over creamy grits, they were also known as “breakfast shrimp.” Today, the simple seafood breakfast has become an iconic Southern dish.
Bridges Block Party Shrimp and Grits Cook-off is the key fundraising event for the fast-growing and academically strong state charter school in Beaufort. In mid-2017, Bridges was named one of South Carolina’s top three charter schools for its academics and a School of Distinction by the South Carolina Public Charter School District.
“Our goal is to bring our community together for a day filled with family fun while also celebrating a Lowcountry classic, shrimp and grits,” said Amy Painton, vice president of the Bridges PTO, organizers of the event. “We also want to raise awareness of our school and gain support to benefit our students and their adventures in education. Proceeds from this year’s event will go directly back into the classroom for educational supplies to benefit our students and teachers at our K-12 public charter school.
General admission for our Block Party is free. Activities, food/beverage, and other items will be ticketed and/or cash/credit. For more information on the Block Party or becoming a sponsor or Chef, email organizers at firstname.lastname@example.org and visit the Event Page on Facebook!
