Beaufort Garden Clubs to plant palms in honor of Arbor Day!

Go GREEN this Holiday Season and come see & learn why planting trees is so important to the future of our beautiful Beaufort, SC!

The City of Beaufort’s Park & Tree Committee will plant two Sabal palmetto trees in honor of South Carolina Arbor Day at 10 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 6. The trees will be planted on Craven Street directly across from the Arsenal. The 15-foot trees will replace palmettos that have been lost.

“This project will enhance Beaufort’s standing as a Tree City USA,” said Bill Jirousek, a member of the committee. “This block of Craven Street is a reminder of our city’s history, and planting trees is a great way to do something positive for our environment and even help with stormwater control.” An added bonus is that the Sabal palmetto is the state tree, he said.

For 28 years, the City of Beaufort has been named a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation. Beaufort has received this national award in recognition of its commitment to its trees and urban/community forests. Criteria for this award include having a tree ordinance, a Tree Board, a community forestry program and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation. “Gaining Tree City USA recognition is a recognition of the hard work done by employees, volunteers, Tree Board members and others who work on behalf of our community trees,” said Robbie Anderson of the Beaufort Parks Department.

The project will eventually include a total of six trees. Funds for the project are being donated by the Beaufort Council of Garden Clubs, the Beaufort Garden Club, the Sea Island Garden Club, the Dataw Garden Club, and Mary Ann Borrman, a member of the Beaufort Garden Club. Members of Palms on the Parkway will plant the trees.

The public is invited to the ceremony.

“Come join us and lend your voice towards helping the community understand why planting trees is so important to the future of our City,” Anderson said.
