Yahoo! Travel names South Carolina state flag #1

Everyone loves South Carolina’s beaches, its food and her people too. And now, Yahoo! Travel has heaped high praises on South Carolina’s state flag, naming it the best design of all 50 states.

South Carolina’s familiar flag, featuring a white Palmetto tree shape and crescent over an indigo field, was adopted way back on January 28th, 1861. “We look at this flag and immediately imagine a slice of heaven,” Yahoo’s posting stated.

The original design, by Colonel William Moultrie, dated back to 1775, and he was said to have chosen blue for the flag’s background because it matched the uniforms of Revolutionary War troops, and the crescent was intended to reproduce the silver emblem worn on the front of their caps, while the Palmetto tree symbolized Moultrie’s heroic defense of the palmetto-log fort on Sullivan’s Island against the British on June 28, 1776.

Rounding out the top five top state flags are Texas, Alabama, New Mexico and Colorado.

How did our nearest neighbors fare in the poll? North Carolina ranked 11th place, while Florida’s flag was named 18th best, and Georgia’s flag came in 27th place.
